Lesson 08: Photogrammetry

Learning Outcomes
    • Understand the concept of photogrammetry

    • Recognize techniques for effectively capturing photos to create a photogrammetry model

    • Describe a variety of software solutions for creating photogrammetry models

    • Construct a simple photogrammetry model

Ben Kreimer’s Guide

How to capture photos for photogrammetry (where to put the camera, lenses, depth of field, background of the object, how many photos to take, manual exposure, manual white balance, manual focus, different levels/tradeoffs of quality

In-class Exercise/Activity for Small Groups

Use display.land or Metashape

Have students bring a small object to photography that has texture and is not reflective (more texture is better.) A running shoe works great. Using a still camera is best, but smartphones can work too. Using a still camera, use manual focus, manual exposure and manual white balance. If using a smartphone, set it to manual or lock focus and exposure. Make photos by circling completely around the object making images from the same distance but different heights: high, medium, low. Have the images overlap by about 35% Capture about 50 images. Jpeg’s are fine
